Provence: A walk through the vineyards of Provence

Provence is famed for its fields of lavender, red-tiled houses, vivid blue skies and glorious sunsets. This wild and beautiful landscape has inspired so many: the Romans, Impressionist painters and writers and film makers alike. The warm Lubéron hills are scented with the aroma of thyme and rosemary and make for ideal walking. Our trails take us from one perched village to another: Lacoste, castle home to the infamous Marquis de Sade, the magical Oppede Le Vieux,  and Gordes, designated one of Frances most beautiful villages. Our walks follows attractive paths through this most Mediterranean of landscapes, where the air is perfumed with the scent of herbs, and buzzards and falcons soar overhead. To discover this region on foot is a delight, all the more so when we stay in attractive hotels and savour classic Provençal dishes flavoured with local olive oil, garlic and tomatoes accompanied by a cold glass of the local Rosé. The red wines are  exceptional and a joy to discover.

Day 1, 2 & 3: Vaison la Romaine Meet in Avignon and transfer to Vaison la Romaine, famous for its Roman ruins; visit the bustling weekly market to pick supplies for lunch al fresco; take a walk across the hills to the charming village of Seguret, enjoy a picnic at a wine estate along the way; hike through the dramatic Dentelles de Montmirail, jagged limestone pinacles, with views of terraced vineyards below; enjoy a tutored tasting of Gigondas wines.

Day 4, 5, 6 & 7: Luberon Explore the wild landscapes of the Luberon; marvel at the 12th-century Abbey of Sénanque, still inhabited by monks tending their lavender fields; walk to the perched village of Roussillon set among dramatic ochre quarries; visit the attractive villages of Bonnieux and Oppede Le Vieux; marvel at the abundance of wildflowers, enjoy a tasting of the delicious wines of the Luberon with an expert wine guide.
